CAP BOARD OF GOVERNORS 2020-2023

CANDIDATE FOR RE-ELECTION 2023-2026

Your CAP. Our future.

Engaged members in partnership with servant and transformational leaders are the key to strengthening and advancing our profession.

WHY RUN FOR A SECOND TERM FOR THE CAP BOG?

I am a full-time pathologist (AP/CP/Cytopathology), chairman of pathology for the Methodist Health System (Dallas), head of our group and President of the Medical Staff. We have a hospital-based practice and two independent laboratories serving 9 hospitals in North Texas. The challenges of running a practice made me realize the importance of advocacy. Together we must work for fair reimbursement (governmental and non-governmental including the professional component of clinical pathology) and a reasonable regulatory environment that does not stifle innovation and allows us to provide high quality, cost-effective, timely and appropriate patient care. We must prevent scope of practice infringements, ensure out of network balance billing laws are fair and protect patients, oppose steerage of specimens to “preferred laboratories”, advance pandemic preparedness through a robust network of local and national laboratories and increase collaboration with other pathology and medical societies. Viable and vibrant state pathology societies are crucial in advancing our mutual agendas. I want to represent you and contribute positively to the pathology community while I’m at the top of my game and dealing with these challenging issues daily in my practice.

MY VISION FOR THE CAP.

A strong CAP is a diverse and inclusive organization with engaged members and leaders working together. We must recruit the best and the brightest US and international medical school graduates and provide them a professional home of colleagues and friends. Growth is essential and can be achieved by providing value and being responsive to our member’s needs. I will listen carefully to CAP member’s concerns. I always welcome suggestions and advice.

A financially sound and fiscally responsible CAP is critically important to advancing our many agendas. Increasing competition in proficiency testing and accreditation, shifting trade policies, geopolitical events and pandemics threaten major sources of revenue. The CAP must diversify its revenue stream while continuing to promote transparency and accountability. I will work closely with CAP staff to achieve our goals and maintain our position as the “gold standard” in PT and laboratory accreditation.

Education is an important member benefit. Our professional success depends on up to date knowledge of scientific and technological advances in pathology. Digital pathology and AI are changing practices and we must actively participate in its implementation and regulation. Members also need guidance and assistance in navigating regulatory and reimbursement issues critical to the survival of their practices. Education includes learning how to advocate for your profession, your patients and yourself.

MY CAP GOALS IF RE-ELECTED

  • Increase visibility and stature of pathology through strong member engagement with legislators, regulators, payers, hospitals, clinicians, and patients. Advocate for fair reimbursement with governmental and private payers.

  • Advocate for reasonable regulations that protect patients and do not overburden laboratories, stifle innovation, or hinder our ability to deliver accurate and timely services.

  • Advance pandemic preparedness, including supply chains, in coordination with the CDC, FDA, and health departments. Private, academic and public laboratories must work together to serve the healthcare needs of our communities.

  • Retain and strengthen the gains achieved by the CAP during the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Strengthen independent and hospital laboratories to form robust networks able to provide accurate and timely testing close to the patient.  Increase collaboration between academic, independent, and reference laboratories.

  • Help pathologists successfully participate in value-based health care models, including supporting and improving the QCDR to allow us to maximize our revenues.

  • Strengthen state pathology societies and increase collaboration with the CAP to celebrate successes and address challenges.

  • Engage medical students, residents, and fellows to secure our future through a new generation of advocates and leaders.

  • Promote and increase the value of PT and accreditation programs and diversify our revenue stream.

  • Increase CAP membership by demonstrating value and engaging members in the HOD, committees, councils, working groups, inspections, and state pathology societies.

  • Ensure the CAP works to increase diversity at all levels.

  • Strengthen the CAP Foundation: it reflects who we are and why we do it.

  • Help select a new CEO to lead the organization, grow profitability, diversify revenue streams and collaborate with members and the BOG.

Advocating for our patients and our profession is a duty that cannot be delegated to others. The risks are too high and the rewards are too great. Our future is on the line.
